By now we all know the benefits of water especially those associated with performance. A dehydrated body is an underperforming body. Even a slight deficiency in water can impede our ability to sustain effective workouts and set new PRs.
Here I want to talk about the underutilized benefits of water before and during training. The intangible advantages of this simple cheap workout hack that’s not so complicated.
In short, water has taken a distant backseat to other practices when it comes to working out. Supplements, namely pre-workout and energy drinks, have taken precedence. In my opinion, this overreliance on these hyper-caffeinated options has become more of a hindrance than an advantage.
Between cost, unknown chemicals, and the simple reliance on these overhyped products it might be time to reassess your relationship with them.
Water hydrates. It fills your muscle cells full of fluid for better pumps, and better recovery between sets, and doesn’t require the stomach to switch on digestive processes robbing your limbs of blood volume.
Water can prime your body for its workout. It can keep your energy in check and sustain hydration for when you’re ready for your post-workout nutrition.
I’ve actually seen some lifters enter the gym, realize they forgot their pre-workout drink, and do a 180 out the door.
That’s just not right.
Try this. If you find yourself relying a bit too much on pre-workout or energy drinks start weening yourself off slowly. Start by only drinking half for a week and then cut out completely the next week. Or you can drink your pre-workout every other day then every third day and then finally cut it all out.
The bottom line is to cut back on the chemicals and drink more water.
