As the old saying goes, it’s not about the destination but the journey. I see many gym-goers talk about their goals without much to show for it. Goals are great, but focusing on the end result and not paying enough attention to the process doesn’t leave you with much progress.
You’ve heard all the quotes:
How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.
The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
It’s all about reps.
So let’s look at a cheat sheet for focusing on the process:
- How many days per week are you committing to training?
- How many sets are you performing per workout?
- What are your rep ranges? Why that rep range?
- Are you applying equal volume to each area?
- Are you prioritizing lagging body parts?
- Are you regulating fatigue? Not only during your individual workouts, but also during the week?
- How long are you resting between sets? Why that amount of time?
- Are you avoiding unnecessary distractions? Always on your phone?
- Do you have a recovery plan?
- How are you tracking your diet?
- What is your goal with your diet? Gain muscle? Lose fat?
- How are you maintaining motivation?
- Do you have a plan when life gets too busy and you need to downshift?
- Are you meal planning?
- Are you keeping track of progress? Are you reviewing it monthly?
These aren’t necessarily goals; they’re more representative of your daily, weekly, and monthly processes. Set your goal, then focus on the daily habits that will get you there.
Let me know in the comments if you want to add to the list.
Happy lifting!
