The Common Thread of Kindness

There is a hidden message out in the world which is: There is a common thread of kindness.

We are inundated with negativity from the news, social media, and that one dude who cut us off in traffic. We tend to focus on the negative far more than the positive. That’s why social algorithms will spread negative headlines many more times than positive ones. We secretly crave negativity in a selfish way.

Many in the world like to see others fail. They see the world as cold, heartless, and unkind. They say that life sucks and then we die. They think that someone is always out to get us and that trust is a foreign concept.

At the end of the day, we tend to view the world with a negative lens to somehow make us feel better as if to believe that life is hard (it is), and why should we even try to do better?

This. I believe, is simply not true.

Kindness is right in front of you

We tend to quickly take for granted and forget daily acts of kindness. The person who let us skip the line at the grocery store because they saw we were holding only three items. The kind gesture of someone letting us into traffic from a long line of cars. The countless smiles from others in our everyday commutes, errands, and appointments.

The waves, the holding open doors, and a greater sense of most people wanting to do the right things in their daily lives. That last one is my main point.

Negativity gets the attention. It gets airtime. It gets shared the most. It gets to occupy major areas of real estate in or heads, rent-free.

But most people want to do the right thing. They want to live their lives the right way: obey laws, be courteous, and extend a helping hand. They don’t want to see others suffer, struggle, or endure extreme hardship. They want to see their fellow human beings succeed, be healthy, and flourish.

They are truly an extension of that common thread of kindness. A thread that is more like a strong steel cable able to support and withstand centuries of strife.

Just an observation… Have a great day!

  1. I like your optimism and positivity here. Common courtesy and decency and civility are still a thing! Yeah, the news is mostly bad most of the time, so it really skews one’s outlook as all grim, dire, and doomsday. So I think you’ve got the right idea, that we need to be intentional to look for and find and focus on the common good. Mankind has a lot of things wrong, but we still reflect the image of our good creator, however marred the image may be.

    1. Thanks, Jason! Yes, we tend to focus our attention on the one unruly passenger on a flight and then generalize that that’s just how society is these days. We forget about the 100 great, respectful passengers.
