As someone who isn’t into supplements all that much (I prefer real food any day) some really do help me with recovery and performance. These are my favorite supplements for more lean muscle, energy, and overall recovery.
Since I still love to go to the gym and get in some intense sessions I know that I’ll need a little extra nutritional attention if I want to keep doing what I do. And I’m sure you’re in the same boat. The worst thing we can do is repeatedly hammer our bodies day-in and day-out without proper nutrition. Additionally, as we get older our system needs a little help to rebuild, get stronger, and improve on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis. Think long term.
Below are four of my go-to supplements that make up the core of my regimen. At the end there is one that I’m experimenting with.
My Favorite Supplements
Veggie protein
I know, I know. Just give me a minute to explain. As whey has been the granddaddy of protein for a long time I experimented with veggie protein for a time. Well, let me tell you, I was pleasantly surprised. This stuff is loaded with a ton of amino acids from numerous plant sources it held it’s own when I needed a quick shot of protein and it filled me up nicely to stave off hunger. It also has a nice array of greens for several servings of vegetables and fiber. I love this stuff. MRM Veggie Protein Powder is my current favorite. Click on pic to check it out.
Whey protein
No surprise here. I’ve recently switched back to whey after a few months of being off. Why? No real earth-shattering reason. I just like to switch up sometimes and I may go back and forth between the two in the near future to have an array of amino acids. I look for a name brand for quality, price (usually buy in bulk for a better deal), and add-ons like probiotics for ease of digestion. MRM Metablic Whey Protein fits the bill perfectly. Creatine monohydrate
Not only has this supplement proven itself over the last couple of decades (!) it’s safe, effective, and is great not only for performance in the gym, but also recovering between workouts. I look for (again) name brand for quality, pure creatine formula (no additives or “boosters”), and a decent price. I’ve been a huge fan of NOW Sports Nutrition Creatine Monohydrate Powder. Multivitamin/mineral
Boring but necessary, a good quality multivitamin serves as insurance. As much as I try to get in all my fruits and veggies packing in a few extra vitamins and minerals is a wise choice for complete recovery. I really like Solimo Men’s One Daily Multivitamin Multimineral. Great price and each bottle contains 365 tablets. Perfect! Click pic for more.
*Acetyl-l-carnitine
This is one I’ve been experimenting with lately. A lot has been reported about acetyl-l-carnitine including improved adipose (fat) metabolism and mood enhancement. I thought I would try it and find out for myself. I’m sure I’ll be posting about my thoughts in the near future. For now I like Nature’s Trove Acetyl-L-Carnitine 500mg. Click pic to find out more.
