What is a Good Moment in Life?

Daily writing prompt
Describe one of your favorite moments.

It’s tough to find any spare time in today’s world. We are overscheduled and overloaded making us feel endlessly overwhelmed. Finding moments that will stick out, stand the test of time, and ultimately be branded firmly in the “favorites” file in our brains seems fewer and farther between.

I have numerous favorite moments in life: family, friends, travels, and many many experiences unique to me and the ones around me. But something sticks out now that is becoming tougher to achieve. Something that is starting to become long forgotten and unfortunately less desirable.

Peace.

No, not the type that solves all of the world’s existential problems (though that would be cool, too). I’m speaking of the moments of inner and outer peace. Those moments of quiet. Moments without external stimuli such as smartphones, tablets, TV, podcasts, radio, or any other products of “noise” pumping into your head.

Now I know not all noise is bad., I love to read, listen to podcasts, and be entertained with quality YouTube videos. I’m always in pursuit of more knowledge to educate and expose myself to new ideas. I believe, however, we’ve turned a blind eye to having more quiet in our lives. Quiet moments to reflect, listen, and let our minds wander naturally.

We’ve let all of this proverbial noise enter into our lives. We’ve allowed the chaos to reign supreme. Now, that noise is calling the shots. It’s harnessed our attention so tightly that we feel, dare I say, truly addicted to its command.

And as addicts, we do what addicts do. We deny we have a problem.

More favorite moments

They don’t come often, but those quiet moments, when they do come, are extremely inviting and renewing. They aren’t easy to come by. They take effort, awareness, and a willingness to unplug. They’re also initially uncomfortable and garner a feeling of missing out.

But here’s the thing. Much like the advice I give to some of my past clients when they are about to go on vacation: don’t buy into the scarcity mentality when it comes to food. When they’re faced with a buffet on a cruise or even donuts in the breakroom, they don’t have to participate. The food will be there and they will make more. We live in a 24-7 society that isn’t short on bad food. It’s okay to pass it up.

That same mentality can be applied to all of our inputs. all those messages, videos, podcasts, TikTok, and streaming services will still be there. They aren’t going anywhere.

Over time, you’ll discover something interesting. You’ll pleasantly experience a feeling of letting go–that most of that noise is just that. Noise.

***

So, (one of) my favorite moments is when I can experience quiet. A physical quiet that will positively influence my mental quiet. Over time you’ll develop more patience, calm, and peace. Have more unplugged moments and finally get back to being a real human.

  1. Really good thoughts. Peace and quiet are more rare these days. Agree: one must be intentional to find those moments. I think that’s why (it seems) mindfulness/meditation has grown popular in our culture.

Also you reminded me: I have a related article about unplugging that I might blog about.

    Thanks for sharing!
